Chemical Oxidation Technology

Chemical oxidation technology is a technology utilized to create cathode materials in a charged state by chemically oxidizing nickel hydroxide to nickel oxyhydroxide.
Tanaka Chemical Corporation has succeeded in creating compounds suitable for a variety of battery applications by controlling the oxidized portions, such as only the particle surface or only a portion of the interior.

Overview Nickel hydroxide [Ni(OH)2], which is the positive electrode material of nickel-metal hydride batteries, releases electrons in the battery to become nickel oxyhydroxide [NiOOH] when charged. When discharged, this nickel oxyhydroxide receives electrons and becomes nickel hydroxide again. In other words, nickel hydroxide is oxidized in the battery by conducting electricity (charging). We are able to promote this oxidation reaction chemically, instead of passing electricity (charging), and convert some of the nickel hydroxide into nickel oxyhydroxide in advance. Furthermore, by controlling manufacturing conditions such as temperature and concentration levels during production, we have succeeded in oxidizing only the surface of the particles and controlling the ratio of oxidized portions in the interior of the particles.
Advantages Contributes to battery miniaturization and higher capacity
Utilized in Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery

Oxidation only on the surface

50% oxidation inside the particle

100% oxidation inside the particle

Point

Our chemical oxidation technology allows us to freely control the degree of oxidation of each particle. This enables us to produce cathode materials with oxidation conditions that meet the various needs of our customers.
