Surface coating technology is a technology employed to coat the surface of particles with cobalt hydroxide when producing nickel hydroxide, which is mainly used as a cathode material for nickel-metal hydride batteries.
By utilizing this technology, Tanaka Chemical Corporation produces cobalt-coated nickel hydroxide that enables smoother battery performance.
Overview
Nickel hydroxide is mainly used as a cathode material in nickel-metal hydride batteries. However, although nickel hydroxide is a cathode material, it itself does not conduct electricity very well (i.e. it has low conductivity). Therefore, it is standard to add cobalt hydroxide as a conductive agent (a battery material that increases the conductivity of the electrodes) along with nickel hydroxide when manufacturing batteries. Cobalt hydroxide dissolves in the alkaline electrolyte in the battery and converts to a conductive compound. This facilitates the smooth transfer of electrons from nickel hydroxide. Within this standard manufacturing background, we have developed cobalt-coated nickel hydroxide, in which cobalt hydroxide is coated on the surface of nickel hydroxide in advance, using our proprietary surface coating technology.
